The water softener in homes is generally installed in the kitchen under the sink and connected to the kitchen pipes. But it can be installed at other places where water supply pipes are available. - Buying a water softener that meets your home requirements is crucial before getting started with installation Few things such as the capacity of the water softener, the size, location of the unit and accessories everything needs to be sorted out before starting the installation.
- The area in which you are planning to install the water softener should be thoroughly cleaned and swept before the installation. Placing and positioning of the unit in the correct direction is crucial. Make sure to place the unit in a way so that the inlet pipe is connected to the water supply pipe and the outlet pipe to the water heater pipe.
- Shut off the water supply before opening the valves to connect the pipes. The power supply and water supply should be cut off to the water heater and for gas water heater turn off the gas valve. Drain the water inside the pipes by releasing the hose bibs.
- Install elbow fittings into the water supply line using a pipe cutter to enable you to run two lines for inlet and outlet ports of the bypass valve. Make sure the orientation is right. The adjustment should be in a way that hard water from the primary water source should run into the softener inlet pipe and soft water should flow outside into the supply pipes of the home.
- Install pipes by cutting into the tube, which leads to the bypass valve. Make sure to solder all the fittings and edges before fitting the plastic bypass valve as the heat from soldering can cause damage to plastic pipes if done later. Reducing fittings can be used to narrow down larger pipes if the pipes are too large. Attach the pipes to the softener by using the compression fittings supplied with the unit. Proper grounding can be ensured by the installation of a jumper across the water softener.
- Attach the drain hose to the unit using a clamp and run the other end into a drain or a utility sink. It is recommended that the end of the tube should be placed 2 inches above the drain hole to prevent the wastewater running back into the pipe and see that it is released and pin it accurately in position.
- The size of the drain hose should be decided based on the distance it needs to cover and the inlet height. Standard hoses will be ½ inch in diameter and can 15 feet in length if it is placed in a lower position than the inlet. But a 5/8-inch diameter hose is required which can cover around 25 feet is necessary if it is placed above the discharged outlet.
- The salt tanks overflow tube should be connected by following the instructions in the manual of the water softener.
- Fit the bypass valve in the bypass position and the run the water into the softener for a few minutes by turning on the water supply. Simultaneously open the gas/ circuit breaker valves to the water heater and turn on the electricity. Make sure to check for leaks.
- Open the inlet control partially on the bypass valve to expel the air in the pipes till the water starts flowing steadily without sputtering. Once the water flow is steady, you can completely open the outlet and inlet bypass controls and fill the tank with salt and water as mentioned in the manual.
